North Devon Branch Meeting Report 14/7

No Human is IllegalMembers of North Devon Socialist Party met in Barnstaple for the fortnightly branch, at a time when the branch is very busy campaigning.  Before planning future activities, there was a discussion on immigration, introduced by JL.  Anti-immigration attitudes played a big part in the election of two BNP MEPs at the recent European Election, and in the introduction (which can be found in the 'downloads' section of this site) and the debate that followed, the importance of class and class issues was emphasised.

While it is important to address misconceptions and myths about immigration, the potential drawbacks for workers must be acknowledged also.  Even this is not enough, and must be accompanies by arguments stressing the root causes of immigration and campaigning to unite local and immigrant workers either industrially or as part of a fight for more resources for public services and housing.

After this, the forthcoming PCS elections and Barnstaple Trades Council meeting was discussed, and the latest reports were given about the Youth Fight for Jobs campaign and Devon Residents Against Incinerators (DRAIN).  Aside from these activities, and the usual branch meetings and stalls, the latest branch newsletter is being prepared, with door-to-door leafletting to take place in September with a DRAIN leaflet.  Summer is usually a time of lowered activity, but there is unlikely to be much of a lull in the activities in North Devon!

Devon Residents Against Incinerators (DRAIN) Campaign Update

DRAIN LogoIt is now some six months since the DRAIN campaign was set up, an alliance which North Devon Socialist Party has been heavily involved with from the very beginning.  While some campaigns concentrate on lobbying Government agencies with technical arguments, we have always emphasised building popular opposition to the scheme to build a waste incinerator on a flood plain in the middle of Barnstaple.

Through a combination of market stalls, leafletting, letter writing and petitioning we are building support, and have attracted the attention of the local press, councillors, and the Lib Dem MP for North Devon Nick Harvey.  In the past week alone we have met with Harvey to outline our opposition, held a stall in the busy local market and leafletted and discussed the campaign with members of the public outside Green Lanes Shopping Centre, where the Council was presenting its propaganda, disguised as 'consultation'.

Scandalously, those wearing Devon County Council namebadges turned out not to be council employees as it would be assumed, but executives from the private company who wants to build the incinerator, there giving a sales pitch!

North Devon branch meeting report

SP Election ManifestoThe topic on discussion at this fortnight's meeting was 'revolutionaries and elections', introduced by DL.  The introduction given by DL, which is available for download in the downloads section of this website, ranged from our view as Marxists towards the institutions of Parliament and local authorities to how we would approach elections and election campaigns.

In the exchanges that followed the introduction, the history of Parliament, not as a representative democratic body but as a check on the executive power of the monarch and then  a historically progressive institution which overthrew the relics of feudalism and sealed the rule of the new capitalist class and system.

The point was raised that now Parliament acts as a reactionary brake on progress, and has developed procedures, conventions and ceremonies, aimed at stifling democracy and coopting those who enter Parliament  with the aim of radical change.

Lindsey workers victory: Militant action pays!

Below is an article by Alistair Tice, the Socialist Party's Regional Secretary for Yorkshire and the Humber.  Thank you to everyone who sent messages of solidarity to strikers and boycotted Total Petrol stations, and most of all to those who took solidarity action across the country.

Lindsey Oil Refinery construction workers have won a stunning victory. All the workers' demands have been met. The 647 dismissals have been withdrawn, the 51 redundancies rescinded and all employees have been guaranteed a minimum of four week's work - what they would have got if Blackett and Charlton had taken them on - ie as much work as is probably available.

This victory has been achieved by the militancy and determination of LOR workers taking unofficial strike action and solidarity of at least 30 other sites, including power stations and petrochemical plants. This exerted enormous pressure on the full-time officials of GMB and Unite who, while repudiating the unofficial action, were then forced to give the recent strike official dispute status once the 647 were dismissed.
